Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system (UTM)
The Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system (UTM) is a map projection system that assigns coordinates to positions on Earth.
Usage in Hamlet Evaluation System (HES)
UTM Coordinates used in Hamlet Evaluation System (HES) consist of 8 characters:
UTM Coordinates. 8-character field consisting of 2-character alpha grid square identification, 3-digit. abscissa in tenths of kilometers, and 3-digit ordinate in tenths of kilometers. Identifies geographic location of hamlet
From the description of the HES Basic Master File.
However this does not seem to be a complete coordinate. The 2-charachter alpha grid square identification (e.g. YD
) seems to be the 100'000 square meter identification of the Military Grid Reference System (MGRS). The locations in HES seem to be missing the UTM Grid Zone Designation (GZD). The The Hamlet Evaluation System - Reevaluated project seems to use some heuristics to find the complete UTM/MGRS coordinate.
