Hamlet Evaluation System (HES) Gazetteer

Provides a mapping from USID numbers to names, provinces and geographic location of hamlets (maybe UTM coordinates?).

Gazetteer Files

There seem to be three HES Gazeetteer files:

• RG349.NPIASS.GZSF (record size: 160)
• RG349.NPIASS.HGAZ (record size: 150)
• RG349.NPIASS.HVGZ (record size: 160)

The technical documentation mentiones that records are consistent when they appear in multiple files but some records only appear in some files.

Documentation for Hamlet Evaluation System (HES) Program R7119P, HES Gazetteer File (part of the technical documentation) mentions that the HES Gazetteer files are created from the Hamlet Evaluation System (HES) Basic Master File 7/1969 - 1/1973 with Program R7119P: Gazetteer File:

Program R7119P generates the HES Gazetteer file from the HES basic master file (R10702)

Record Layouts

There seem to be three record types in the HES Gazetteer files:

• Date Record
• Village Record
• Hamlet Record

Only the Hamlet Record contains an UTM coordinate. The UTM ield is documented to be 8 characters wide.
